Description

UNR at Lake Tahoe - Prim Library

Join us for the reception and artist talk of Altitude: In the Peripheral an exhibition by Nick Cahill in the Prim Reference Gallery at the Prim Library. The event will start at 5pm and the artist talk will start at 5:30 on the Mezzanine. There will be light food and sparkling water severed. This event is free and open to everyone.

Cahill is a Tahoe local, an outdoor adventure filmmaker and photographer. He is driven by storytelling and the pursuit of wild places. If his work looks familiar you might have seen it work on the cover of National Geographic’s Guide to the Night Sky or in documentaries focused on exploration and resilience.

“This body of work moves between scales, from a minuscule detail of ice, though the rugged alpine terrain, to the vast night skies. The images were made in places where conditions are slow movement and narrow attention. At altitude, effort becomes a filter. What remains are moments that sit just outside everyday awareness.

The work shifts between micro and macro not to compare size, but to challenge how we see. A snowflake, a single tree, a distant ridgeline, or a galaxy are treated with the same intent. Each requires presence, patience, and the willingness to look longer than normal. Much of this work comes from returning to the same environments over time. Waiting long enough for the obvious to fall away. In that space, the peripheral becomes primary. These images are not about spectacle, but about noticing what often goes unseen when attention is divided or hurried.”
