Manager of Mountain Sports

PRIMARY FUNCTION:

The Manager of Mountain Sports is responsible for the development, implementation, management, and quality improvement of a variety of outdoor programs. The Manager will identify opportunities for club members with-in the areas of mountain sports and outdoor recreation. Through strong internal and external relationships, this position will oversee the planning and implementation of programs ensuring members receive safe and impactful programs.

KEY ROLES (Essential Job Responsibilities):

PROGRAMMING

Develop programs, camps, workshops, and events within the mountain sports and outdoor recreation program space that support the organization’s plan for strategic growth.

Establish mountain sports and outdoor recreation programs, activities and services that prepare youth for success and that create a club environment that facilitates achievement of the Formula For Impact Priority Outcomes.

Ensure a healthy and safe environment, ensuring facilities, equipment and supplies are maintained.

Evaluate the Club’s overall mountain sports and outdoor recreation programs, services and activities to ensure they meet stated goals, objectives, and member needs and interests. Compile regular reports reflecting all activities, attendance and participation.
Ensure grant requirements are being met through program delivery.

Communication

Responsible for managing the promotion, participant recruitment, scheduling, curriculum, and communications associated with mountain sports and outdoor recreation programs.

Increase the visibility of mountain sports and outdoor recreation programs within the Club and the community through the use of the club’s communication strategies (newsletters, social media, marketing materials).

Frequently check emails, phone, and other sources of communication to maintain contact with internal and external relationships on a daily basis, ensuring expected service delivery.

Build strong partnerships with local businesses, resorts, districts, community partners, and individual donors. Involved in the recognition and stewardship of program supporters.

Develop new partnerships with parents, community leaders, leaders in the sports and recreation community, and other sports and recreation businesses organizations.

Resource Management

Recruit, hire, onboard, orient, train, and manage all staff, volunteers, or contracted personnel assigned to the mountain sports and outdoor recreation department. Provide oversight, work performance appraisals, discipline, and resources as needed.

Formulate and prepare budgets for mountain sports and outdoor recreation programs. Control expenditures against budget.

Ensure mountain sports and outdoor recreation systems are in place to maintain the condition of the physical properties and program equipment. Ensure compliance with organization policies.

Fulfill requirements and deliverables related to specific grants and funding sources.

Develop schedule for facility and equipment use, ensuring resources are available for programs relating to sports and recreation as well as other program areas.

RELATIONSHIPS:

Internal: Maintain close daily contact with Club staff, with an emphasis on Site Managers and direct reports, across all sites (professional and volunteer) to interpret and explain mountain sports and outdoor recreation program objectives and standards, discuss issues, and provide/ receive information. Has regular contact with parents and members as needed for discipline, advise and counsel. Attend required staff meetings.

External: Maintain contact as needed with external community groups, schools, member's parents and others to assist in resolving logistical challenges, and to represent the club’s sports and recreation programs. Attend required meetings with partners.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Purchase or approve purchases of supplies and equipment.

  2. Assist in organization wide training events (CPR/FIrst Aid, Summer Training, New

    Volunteer Orientations)

  3. Work with staff during special events to carry out programs in all departments.

  4. Exercise authority in problems relating to members; utilize guidance and discipline plan.

  5. May oversee special programs or events, and/or participate in the implementation of other

    club activities as necessary.

  6. May be required to drive the club van. This requires submitting to The Boys & Girls Club of

    North Lake Tahoe Drug Testing Policy, and obtaining a CDL.

SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:

  • ●  Four year degree from an accredited college or university, or equivalent experience.

  • ●  A minimum of five years work experience in a Boys & Girls Club or similar organization

    planning and supervising sports and recreation programs based on the developmental

    needs of young people, or equivalent experience.

  • ●  Coaching experience with: mountain biking, skiing, disc golf, and other outdoor sports.

  • ●  Demonstrated ability in personnel supervision, facilities management, and the

    recruitment and retention of key personnel.

  • ●  Strong communication skills, both oral and written.

  • ●  Ability to recruit, train, supervise, and motivate staff.

  • ●  Ability to deal effectively with members including discipline problems.

  • ●  Working knowledge of budget preparation, control, and management.

  • ●  Event Management skills.

  • ●  Demonstrated program development and evaluation skills.

  • ●  Demonstrated ability in working with young people, parents and community leaders.

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT:

    • ● Must be able to move freely about the club and outdoor environment to supervise and monitor the participation of staff and members both on and off-site, maintaining a safe environment for all.

    • ●  Ability to lift 50 lbs.

    • ● Regularly required to use hands and fingers to feel, talk, and hear.

    • ●  May be required to walk, sit or stand for long periods of time.

    • ●  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and ability to adjust focus.
